Jones coming to lay groundwork for Obama trip

From The Hindu

Gneral James Jones, National Security Advisor will travel to India between July 14 and 16, the White House confirmed on Friday.

In a statement, Mike Hammer, National Security Council Spokesman, said that after flying out to Paris and Brussels, General Jones will make his way to India. The visit follows from the invitation extended to General Jones by his Indian counterpart, National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon.

Mr. Hammer said that during his visit to New Delhi, the General would meet with Mr. Menon and other senior Indian officials to discuss “a full range of subjects key to the strategic partnership we are developing with India, including counter-terrorism cooperation, regional security, defence cooperation, and export controls.”

Mr. Hammer noted that General Jones’ visit would also serve as an opportunity to begin laying the groundwork for a successful visit by President Obama to India in November.

In his stops prior to New Delhi, National Security Advisor General Jones will consult with French officials, NATO Secretary General Rasmussen, and other allies in Paris and Brussels regarding Afghanistan, Middle East, Iraq, Iran, and preparations for NATO’s fall summit in Lisbon, Mr. Hammer said.
